Per-Contact vs Flat-Rate vs Per-Account: Instagram Automation Pricing Explained

July 8, 2026 · 6 min read

Instagram DM automation tools price themselves in a handful of different ways, and the model matters more than the headline number on the pricing page. Here's a plain breakdown of the four models in use in 2026, and what each one actually costs you as your account grows.

Per-contact billing

This is the model ManyChat has historically used: pricing tiers based on how many contacts are in your subscriber list. It's intuitive at small scale, but the bill rises automatically as your audience grows, regardless of how much you're actually using the tool that month. A viral post can push you into a higher tier overnight.

Flat-rate billing

Some tools, like InstantDM, charge one flat monthly fee regardless of contact count or send volume. This is predictable and easy to budget for, though flat-rate tools sometimes cap the number of campaigns, accounts, or team members included at that price, so it's worth checking what the flat rate actually covers.

Per-DM or usage-based billing

A smaller group of tools charge based on the number of DMs sent, similar to a metered utility. This aligns cost directly with usage, which can be attractive for low-volume accounts, but it also means cost is harder to predict month to month, especially around a successful campaign or seasonal spike.

Per-account billing

This model, common among agency-oriented tools, charges a flat fee per connected Instagram account rather than per contact or per message. It scales predictably with the number of clients or brands you manage rather than with audience size, which is why it tends to appeal to agencies and multi-brand operators. Rates in this bracket generally run from around $20 to $100 per account per month, though it can get expensive for agencies managing large numbers of accounts, since the total scales linearly with account count.

Where social.fluxx lands

social.fluxx uses automation-based tiers (Starter at $5/month for 2 automations, up to Scale at $24/month for unlimited), with every tier including up to 6 connected Instagram accounts, unlimited contacts, and unlimited DM volume. That's a fourth shape again: the automation cap sets the tier, but neither your audience size nor the number of Instagram accounts you connect multiplies the bill the way per-contact or per-account pricing does.

The takeaway

There's no universally best model, only the one that matches how you actually use the tool. What matters most in any model is whether the limits are stated clearly and whether growth is met with a predictable next tier rather than a silent bill spike.
